The heat and humidity in London has been a challenge for us all. I for one, love all things summer and therefore don’t feel like complaining is the right way to go here, but I do find that it can be irksome when travelling on the tube with sweat dripping from the end of your elbow.
At times like these, I bring my focus internally and try to get to a place where I feel ok. No, no, not the “happy place” with unicorns and rainbows – I focus on my breath.
Practising diaphragmatic breathing every day, has the benefit of teaching your body how to breathe efficiently, it stimulates the relaxation response, can relieve pain and gently stretches and tones core muscles of the abdomen and back muscles. It’s a great de-stress technique that can be practised anywhere.
Why not give it a go?
Bring your awareness to your belly.
Breathe in through your nose, and exhale through your mouth. When you breathe in, feel the belly rising, and when you breathe out, let the belly sink.
Notice that you can make the out-breath longer than the in-breath. Keep cycling this breathing and notice any changes that might occur in body or mind.
Continue for as many breaths as is useful to you......or until you reach your destination.
