Health coaching is a process that facilitates healthy, sustainable behaviour change by challenging a client to listen to their inner wisdom, identify their values, and transform their goals into action.
Research suggests that up to 85% of chronic disease is caused by diet and lifestyle factors. Conditions like IBS and digestive disorders, skin problems, diabetes and autoimmune conditions. What this means is that in many cases, the solution to living a healthful life involves making effective changes to our diet and lifestyle.
This sounds simple enough but have you ever committed to eating more healthily, getting more exercise, or reducing your stress levels – only to fall off the wagon after a few weeks? That’s because behaviour change is hard, and most people don’t know how to do it successfully. Everyone wants to get the most out of life, and we know that eating junk food, remaining sedentary, and staying up all night isn’t good for us. Yet often, we continue these behaviours anyway. We might try a drastic diet or exercise regimen at the start of the new year or before we go on a summer holiday, but these aren’t sustainable in the long term.
Determination and will power can only last so long without the right support, strategy and accountability. According to psychological research, willpower is like a muscle. It’s a finite resource that depletes with use. As a result, by the end of a strenuous day, your willpower muscles are exhausted and you’re left to your naked and defenceless self — with little control to resist old habits. What is needed are strategies to make new lifestyle habits that stick.
This is the domain of a Health Coach. A Health Coach will help you adopt the changes you’d like to make in a manageable and supported way. Studies show that Health Coaches can help people manage chronic conditions, like diabetes, sustainable weight loss, increase movement and activity, manage stress and improve mental health.
They can also work alongside a GP, Nutritionist or Functional Medicine Practitioner to help implement healthier lifestyle decisions that stick. Desired changes become manageable through a process of addressing the underlying reasons for why people are unable to follow through on health recommendations.
So why is the coach approach so effective? Accountability. When you tell another person that you are going to do something, and you know that you will have to report back to them, you will naturally exert additional effort to make sure that you follow through.
